I'll admit, when I purchased the four currently available My Favorite Barbie dolls, I was least excited about 1971 Malibu Barbie. Mattel created a repro of Malibu Barbie only a few years ago, and I didn't see the need to do another. Plus, I'm just not that into the Malibu dolls. I was looking forward to seeing the fashion, but that was the extent of my enthusiasm.

Then I received the dolls and de-boxed them, and discovered that the most faithful reproduction was actually this doll. Malibu Barbie doll features a new, more accurate body sculpt, and the face paint and hair texture are almost perfect matches to the original. FAR superior to the previous repro. The Lemon Kick fashion is also lovely, and it's a vintage fashion I've always admired. If you don't get any of the other dolls, get this one. Five stars.

Dressed in her trademark blue tank swimsuit, "Malibu" Barbie comes with her sunglasses and fuzzy yellow beachtowel, just like she did in 1971. She also comes with a bonus fashion. "Lemon Kick" is one of the most sought-after Barbie fashions of the era. Coming at the tail end of the Mod craze, "Lemon Kick" is a gorgeous two-piece playsuit made of sunny yellow pleated chiffon. It's comprised of sheer palazzo pants, matching solid yellow tap panties, a top trimmed with white braid and pink ribbon, plus a pair of cute yellow pilgrim shoes.

There's been a lot of keen attention to detail with this reproduction. Issued to mark Barbie's 50th anniversary, this is the perfect gift for the Barbie fanatic in your family.
